The AIDS Committee of Cambridge, Kitchener, Waterloo and Area (ACCKWA) has expanded healthcare services for individuals impacted by HIV

Kitchener, ONRuth Cameron, the Executive Director of ACCKWA, is pleased to announce another significant expansion to the clinical services and supports available through ACCKWA for local individuals and multiple communities including

  • people that are vulnerable to, living with and affected by HIV, hepatitis C and other sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections,
  • local African, Caribbean and Black communities,
  • local Indigenous communities,
  • communities impacted by homelessness, and injection drug use and other substance use,
  • local LGBTQ communities seeking affirming health care providers.

ACCKWA is the AIDS Service Organization (ASO) supporting individuals living with and at risk for HIV in Waterloo Region. The organization was started in 1985 by a local group of individuals who were concerned about the supportive care needs of local gay men. Today, we support over 400 individuals and families impacted by HIV on an ongoing basis and provide information, safer sex and harm reduction supplies, brief counselling support and referrals to over 18,000 individuals at risk for HIV and related infections in Waterloo Region annually. ACCKWA has locations in Cambridge, and Kitchener, and is supported by the efforts of over 60 volunteers and 30 placement students annually.

Addressing Gaps in Care

Seventy-five per cent (75%) of ACCKWA service users identifying as people living with HIV live in Kitchener. ACCKWA is pleased to partner with HIV/AIDS Resources and Community Health (ARCH) Guelph to provide accessible HIV clinical care for individuals living with HIV and those co-infected with hepatitis C or other infectious diseases at an accessible location in their community. ARCH Clinic @ ACCKWA operates on Tuesdays in Kitchener at ACCKWA’s main office. Locating a variety of social and health care services, including access to primary care, within community-led HIV/AIDS organizations is considered the gold standard in HIV care and support. ACCKWA is one of three ASOs in the province that have been able to implement this care model. We are pleased to establish this clinic in addition to our existing primary care, prevention and testing focused clinical services which are listed on page 2 of this document.
